Often deemed “The New Rich”, the Defence Housing Authority is a community known for its upscale shops, corporate offices, vibrant social life, and literate elite. Residential homes in the area start at around Rs 20 million (UK £150,000) and go up’ to Rs 25 crore (UK £2,000,000) and above. Private school tuition rates have increased in recent years. The area is maintained by Defence Housing Authority which is backed by Pakistan Army. They have employed professional management structure, with separate departments for each and every aspect, e.g. security, maintenance, administration, accounts, planning, etc.

Furthermore, the area has also undergone extensive gentrification, bringing in a more wealthy base. The recent influx of population from the adjoining areas has also given birth to a number of problems and the crime rate has also gone up. As a result of this, DHA guards have stepped up patrolling.

During the past five years, developers have claimed extraterritorial land, which has increased new development in the area. New developments include a world-class golf resort in partnership with Bandar Raya of Malaysia in Phase 6 of DHA and a shopping and office complex in partnership with Global Haly of the United Kingdom in Phase 2 of DHA Lahore.

DHA encompasses two famous shopping centres, known as the ‘Y-block’ market] and the ‘H-block’ market, which hold all kinds of Western to Continental food shops, cafes, hospitals, fitness clinics, gyms and gift shops. As of late, Y-block has also had the honor of playing host to one of Lahore’s very first tattoo shop as well. DHA Y Block also has a Sports Club having gym, large commercial swimming pool (design, execution and supply & installation of pool equipment by Jopic Pool)and other sports facilities for the community. Planning and development

Defence Housing Authority is one of the most well-planned societies in the whole of Pakistan. Currently, DHA has seven phases, from phase 1 to phase 7 that are open for possession of the civilian population. Subdivisions

Defence is divided into 10 subdivisions (or phases), which each phase being subdivided further into blocks. Each phase also has a central commercial area to cater to the local community. Housing construction began from Defence I and proliferated east and south towards what is today Defence VII. The remaining four phases (Defence VIII, IX, XI, XII) are currently under development. Housing plots range from five marla (approx. 1361 square feet) to 2 kanals (approx. 10890 square feet). The central headquarters was originally located in Defence III, Sector Y but relocated to Defence VI, Sector A to accommodate more residents in the neighbourhood.

Health care

The main hospital situated in the heart of DHA is one of the best hospitals called The National Hospital. However, recent reports of doctors negligence are on the rise, questioning the integrity of the hospital. Alternative hospitals within easy reach of DHA can be found on the Defence Main Boulevard (the road leading to the main DHA entrance). In addition to the hospitals, small clinics can be found in markets all over. Many pharmacies can also be found scattered throughout. T block will soon be having a health /wellness medical spa called SAMS (Skin Analysis Medical Spa) However, a famous Day Spa from Islamabad by the name of Nirvana has already started operating in Phase 5 (near LUMS).

Food

DHA, like the rest of Lahore, is overflowing with food lovers and has a lot of variety of foods on offer, from fast food chains such as McDonald’s, Hardees, Kentucky Frid, Chicken and Pizza to upper-scale restaurants specializing in Pakistani and Western cuisine. The ‘Food Street’ situated in the ‘H-Block’ market is home to many local small-scale restaurants and takeaways providing countless cuisines; the famous ones are Cock & Bull (famous for its chicken cheese shawarma) and Karachi Hot’n’Spicy (for Pakistani cuisine). Besides the larger restaurants, DHA is full of small cafes which offer a nice atmosphere to chill out, such as Jammin Java, The Hot Spot, Masoom’s Pancake Lounge, Gloria Jean’s Cafe, Coffee Planet, Cosa Nostra, Second Cup, Coffee Tea & Company, Coffee Republic, and English Tea House.

Education

The DHA Education System (DHAES) operates a number of schools and colleges offering education to residents of the DHA. Established in 1993, the prime responsibility of DHAES is to provide quality education at an affordable fee structure to the students of DHA and its suburban areas. Started with two Schools, but now it boasts of eight following institutions which include two colleges and five schools and Centre of Excellence – a Training Institute for teachers’ career progression.

DHA Lahore Signal Free Corridor is 5 km long from the famous Defence Mor Walton Road to Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). It includes two flyovers and three underpasses.

DHA Lahore Signal Free Corridor can be categorized into five divisions:

The first flyover has been designed on the really busy area of Defence Mor which is a curved flyover and allows that traffic to use it which is coming from DHA and want to take exit from it.So it is now totally signal free exit from DHA which will really help the traffic about saving their precious time.

PSO Chowk Underpass and Flyover

After the Deffence Mor flyover when we move forward then we will the PSO CHOWK which is completely changed now. You will see two major changes there, the first one is the beautiful and spacey underpass and then there is a curved flyover from Main Boulevard of DHA phase 1 towards Y block of DHA phases 3.

Masjid Chowk Underpass

After PSO CHOWK here comes the MASJID CHOWK which really famous because of the Grand ALLAH-O-AKBER mosque of DHA and also the famous commercials of DHA phase 1 H block and G block. This chowk is also now totally signal free because of the new undDHA Lahore Signal Free trafficerpass which allows the straight going traffic from PSO CHOWK to GHAZI road.

Ghazi Road Underpass

GHAZI road chowk has also been refurbished by a new underpass just like MUSJID chowk. It was also really busy area of this rout before, but now it is signal free and all the traffic has been scheduled to their own paths.

 

Lalik Chowk Transformation

LALIK chowk has been totally modified by DHA for making it more reliable to their users. DHA introduced more advanced system for drain their and also lots of other things which makes its way easier to the residents of DHA.

While apart of all this advancement a control room has been established for traffic management as well. The entire route will be monitored through 150 CCTV cameras and 350 cameras installed under Punjab Safe City Authority will also be integrated to this monitoring system. Apart from underpasses and flyovers, Lalik Chowk has been remodeled as well. For traffic management, officials on heavy bikes and vehicles (patrolling) will be designated as well.
